The majority of Australians appear to feel that the wealthy should pay more tax. 60% of respondents in a recent ACTU survey support raising taxes for Australia’s highest income earners. Major findings of a recent ACTU study include:
- Support for raising taxes for people who earn more than $200,000 per year.
- Support for cutting taxes for people in the $36,000 and $79,000 tax brackets.
- Support for extra spending on social services rather than across the board tax concessions.
Adding fuel to the tax reform debate ahead of the federal government’s October tax forum, these results were released alongside new discussion papers. According to ACTU secretary Jeff Lawrence, these figures show that Australian’s want a fairer tax system.
The ACTU hopes that the Government tax forum in October looks at a broader view for tax reforms rather than focusing solely on the business agendas which have dominated these discussions in the past.
