Why did I need to lodge my 2022 tax return before the 2022 tax deadline?
Taxpayers who don’t lodge their yearly tax return before the tax deadline can face penalties and interest charges from the ATO. Even if you didn’t work during this time, you should still tell the ATO by submitting a Non Lodgement Advice. (We can help with those too!)
How much are ATO late penalties?
The ATO can apply penalties of $222 for not lodging a return on time. But that’s not all, once they do apply a penalty, it will continue to increase over time.
Penalties for late tax returns
Days Past Deadline — Late Lodgement Penalty
1 – 28 days — $222
29 – 56 days — $444
57 – 84 days — $666
85 – 112 days — $888
113+ days — $1,110
Make sure you lodge your overdue 2022 tax return before the ATO catches up with you!
Can Etax get me a 2022 tax deadline extension?
As the 2022 tax deadline has now past, we can no longer apply for an extension for you.
Etax can usually get you an extension of your tax deadline, often to 15 May the following year, IF you meet these conditions:
- You appointed a tax agent like Etax before the tax deadline of 31 Oct
- You don’t have a prior or existing tax debt with the ATO
- No un-lodged or overdue tax returns for previous years
- No outstanding Centrelink or Child Support debts
I don’t have a record of my income. Do I need it?
Etax collects your income records directly from the ATO as part of our services. As well as your employment income, we also collect bank interest, Centrelink and other income records the ATO has on your file. If you don’t already see your income prefilled when you start you 2022 tax return, get in touch with your Etax Accountant, via My Messages or Live Chat.
Can Etax help me if I get an ATO fine?
If you receive a fine for missing the 2022 tax deadline, our team of tax experts can contact the ATO on your behalf to try to get your penalties cancelled or reduced. But there’s no guarantee they will.
The ATO may waive or reduce your fine but only if:
- All of your tax returns up to date
- You have no other debts with the ATO
If you do have any outstanding tax returns, it is highly unlikely the ATO will be lenient and waive your fine.
If we cannot help you waive the fine, we can request a payment plan for you to make the amount owing easier to manage.
Won’t the ATO just forget about old tax returns?
No, the ATO never forgets!
So don’t think if you ignore it, it’ll just somehow not exist anymore. It really isn’t worth waiting until the day the ATO catches up with you.
