Why do I have to pay HELP (formerly HECS) in my tax return when I have already paid it during the year from my pay? top

Your HELP debt repayment is not known until you lodge your end of year income tax return as it is calculated on your annual taxable income. You are notionally liable for a HELP debt repayment if your income exceeds the thresholds and this will show in our estimate if you have entered your HELP debt information correctly. If you have had HELP debt deductions made from your pay during the year, these will be included as part of your Tax Credits figure and will already be included in the amount you entered at Item 1.
