Can I Claim My Home Computer Use as a Tax Deduction?

Do you ever find yourself taking your work home with you, answering Etax Accountants Blog: Can you claim your home computer use as a deduction?your emails at home or working at home through an evening? If you answered yes and you use your home computer or laptop for these duties, you may be entitled to claim your computer as a tax deduction.

How?

If you have purchased a computer or software and use them for work purposes (i.e. to earn an income), then you can claim a tax deduction for the business use percentage (the amount of time you use the computer for work verses the time you use it for personal activities).

Please note: If you purchase a computer valued at more than $300 you will need to depreciate it year to year; you cannot claim the whole purchase price in one year.

At Etax Accountants, we can work your claim out for you if you provide us with:

  • The purchase price of the computer or laptop
  • The purchase date of the computer
  • The business use percentage
  • If it is a laptop or desktop computer

If you lease or pay a monthly fee for your computer, you can claim the business percentage use of the lease payments on your tax return instead. This will generally be a larger deduction than if you were claiming just the depreciation.
